Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Review

Caesar and his family of Apes return in the box office hit, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

I could do this review by telling you about the story but since every moment in the movie, effects the what happens next, I won't go into detail of it because I don't want to spoiler the movie. That being said, let's talk about the apes. After all is the planet of the apes.

Visual effects are beyond amazing, mainly in the vision of the apes. From their eyes to their fur, there is no detail over looked in the design of Caesar and the rest of his family. They look so real. One of my favorite parts of the detail in this film is when the Apes and Humans interact such as touching hands or moving around each other. It is as if they filmed with real life apes (No real apes were used in the making of this film or this review).

Here is the only effect that I didn't totally get with this film, 3D. Don't get me wrong, it is totally worth seeing in the bigger theaters like T-Rex Theatre at Essex Cinemas, but the 3D just doesn't make sense to me. I've seen movies where the images truly do pop off the screen, this isn't one of them. The only time that I really see the 3D work is when it is raining in possibly three scenes.

Now the other piece to talk about in this film is location. Yes, it is based in based in what seems to be the San Francisco area (I did get that idea from the Golden Gate Bridge), but it wasn't all filmed there. The beauty shots as they called them of the city were filmed there, but some of the scenes were filmed in Canada but most of them were filmed in the place known as Hollywood South aka Louisiana. Both the ape village and the human city were filmed in the New Orleans area. Fun fact, the ape village was built in the old parking lot at the closed down Six Flags park in New Orleans. Just goes to show you how fantastic movie magic really is. A lot of the other locations were filmed in the state of Louisiana as well. I can't wait to see what other movies film in Hollywood South.

Over all I really like this movie and feel that it will stay at the top of the box office at least for the action movies. I know it will beat out the new film “The Purge: Anarchy” because the Planet of the Apes film has a point to it, where Purge is just a way to show people shooting each other for no reason at all, besides the fact the law isn't there. So what? I want to go watch a movie where Apes and Humans are really trying to figure out what is going on, not just a film promoting everything wrong with the world. That's how I feel.

So if you are going to swing into the theater and check out a film, you should make it Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Thank you to ESSEX CINEMAS and T-REX for being the theater of choice for my movie reviews. When you are looking for the best place to check out a movie, make it ESSEX CINEMAS and T-REX at the Essex Outlets Center in Essex, VT! http://www.essexcinemas.com
